According to the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Fengal has weakened into a deep depression. It is likely to move westwards very slowly and weaken gradually into a depression over north Tamil Nadu during the next few hours.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a warning of significant rainfall in Kerala due to cyclone Fengal, currently positioned as a strong low-pressure area over northern Tamil Nadu.

NEW DELHI, Dec 1 (Reuters) - Cyclone Fengal killed at least 19 people in India and Sri Lanka and caused flooding in Tamil Nadu state and the Puducherry region after crossing India's southern coast from the Bay of Bengal on Saturday.

The cyclone made landfall near the union territory of Puducherry on Saturday night, bringing heavy downpour to Tamil Nadu state. Capital Chennai received over 18cm of rainfall in 24 hours from Friday to Saturday evening, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said.

Cyclone Fengal's fury has brought widespread destruction in several parts of Tamil Nadu. Seven people feared trapped after a mudslide in Tiruvannamalai amid heavy rain, 30 NDRF personnel engaged in rescue operation using hydraulic lifts.

Indian Army conducted rescue operations in flood-hit Puducherry due to Cyclone Fengal, evacuating over 200 residents.

Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy said that the flooding in the city was caused by record 50 centimetres of rainfall overnight.
