Former Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher was listed as one of the top candidates for the opening. Fisher was fired last season after going 45-25 over six seasons with the Aggies. He received $77.5 million from Texas A&M, the largest buyout in college football history.

The Mountaineers will begin a national search for a new West Virginia head football coach after Neal Brown was fired following a 6-6 campaign. Brown finished his tenure in Morgantown with a 37-35 record,

West Virginia was among the schools that opted to make a head coaching change in the days following the conclusion of the 2024 college football season. Neal Brown was fired by the school after leading the Mountaineers for the past six seasons to a record of 37-35.
