SEPTA riders may be surprised to find their commute costs more this month. Amid last month’s celebration of Gov. Josh Shapiro redirecting $153 million in federal funds to SEPTA — a move that averted a daunting 21.

The 7.5% fare increase, which took effect Sunday, was approved by the SEPTA board on Nov. 21. It is expected to add $14.4 million in annual revenue. SEPTA last raised fares in 2017.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- SEPTA fares are going up on subways, trolleys, and buses, beginning on Sunday, Dec. 1. The board approved the 7.5 percent increase earlier this month, as the transit agency faces a massive $240 million budget deficit.

SEPTA’s first fare hike in seven years goes into effect on Sunday, Dec. 1. The discounted base fare increases from $2 to $2.50 on buses, subways and trolleys. That's the same as the current cash fare.

SEPTA raises fares by 50 cents to address a $240M budget deficit, while passes remain unaffected. Other planned hikes are deferred thanks to federal highway funds. Transfers remain free, and three stations are reclassified to benefit passengers.

SEPTA riders $2.50 to travel by bus, subway and trolley. Single-trip Regional Rail fares are also increasing anywhere from $0.25-$1 depending on where you get on and off.The price hike comes as SEPTA implements a 7.

Be prepared to pay more to ride on SEPTA.

With the start of December, SEPTA's base fares increased to $2.50 on Sunday. However, a new influx of funding has postponed a second, more drastic fare rate increase planned for next year.
